Neil Lennon delighted by James Forrest display

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was thrilled by teenager James Forrest's first league start, which was capped by a great goal against St Mirren.

The 19-year-old thundered in the third goal in a 4-0 victory at Celtic Park.

And Lennon said: "I'm trying to keep a lid on the kid, not banging the drum, trying to play it down, but I couldn't keep him out of the team any longer.

"He was ready to play and I think everybody saw today how good he can be. It's a great start to his career."

Forrest impressed as a substitute at Inverness last weekend, twice going close with strikes from distance, and also featured as a second half replacement in Thursday's Europa League win over Utrecht.

"Everything you do, you try to do positively," added Lennon, who also saw Joe Ledley, Shaun Maloney and Ki Sung Yueng find the net.

"He's an exciting player with an eye for goal.

"He's an old-fashioned winger who just wants to hurt people. He looks like a kid that's come in off the street and said, 'Right, throw me a ball, I'm ready to play'.

"I love his attitude and he's a breath of fresh air."

Lennon was pleased by Celtic's fluent dismantling of St Mirren, with the Paisley side lucky to avoid a much heavier defeat.

"We got a clean sheet and some of our football at times attacking-wise was breathtaking," he continued.

"We have got energy in the team and we've got quality. It's all right me asking them to do it, they've got to take it on board.

"You can't play like that all the time, but in certain games you can and the crowd responded to the players.

"It was important to go to Utrecht with a good result because it's a big game in the context of the season and we'd like to get a European run going."

Lennon added that defender Glenn Loovens, linked with a possible move away from Celtic, had not been dropped, but was absent because of a hamstring strain.

Ein Tief wird sicherlich kommen, aber dann hoffe ich einfach mal, daß Lennon weiterhin zu ihm hält. Im Moment echt eine Rakete, ist mir fast schon unheimlich.

Celtic's James Forrest wins SPL young player award

James Forrest's fine start to the season has resulted in the midfielder being named top young player in the Scottish Premier League during August.

The Celtic 19-year-old received his Clydesdale Bank Young Player of the Month award after breaking into the first team this season.

Forrest made his debut in May and has made six appearances this term.

And, on Tuesday, he helped Scotland's under-21 side qualify for the European Championship play-offs.

Forrest followed that by scoring Celtic's opening goal in a 3-0 win over Hearts in Glasgow.

The delighted midfielder told the Scottish Premier League's website: "It is my first wee run in the team and this is recognition I have done quite well.

"Playing in front of 50,000 at Celtic Park is what it's all about."

Celtic are preparing to inject some urgency into the recovery of James Forrest.

The club are becoming concerned at the slow progress he has made in shaking off an ankle injury.

The rising star has not been able to kick a ball since scoring in the 3-0 win over Hearts at Parkhead on September 11.

Manager Neil Lennon believes that the side has suffered a severe lack of width in the three games which Forrest has been forced to miss.

And, with Paddy McCourt also sidelined with the shoulder injury sustained at Kilmarnock eight days ago, the push is on to get Forrest back on the road to full recovery.

It is a measure of the progress the youngster has made since breaking through to the first team at the end of last season that Lennon is so keen to get him back into the starting XI.

Lennon revealed that what initially appeared to a minor ankle problem has proved much more troublesome than predicted and admitted: “We don’t know about James’s recovery. He might be a doubt for next week.

“He has reacted slowly to the injury and he may have an injection tomorrow to see if that will settle it down.”

Forrest and McCourt have been joined in the treatment room by Emilio Izaguirre and Charlie Mulgrew, with both left-backs sidelined by thigh injuries.

Izaguirre had to limp off against Inverness last midweek after suffering a small tear in a muscle and Mulgrew – who has already missed several weeks of this season through a hamstring problem – could not come out for the second half on Saturday after complaining of a recurrence.

Lennon has every sympathy for Mulgrew and said: “I really do feel for Charlie.

“He seemed to pull up just before the end of the first half in the game against Hibs, when he was chasing Michael Hart into the corner. We will have to wait to see the extent of the injury.”

In the absence of Izaguirre and Mulgrew, Lennon was again forced to drop Joe Ledley into the left-back position.

But, the manager has his fingers crossed that either Izaguirre or Mulgrew will recover in time to line up against Hamilton at Parkhead on Saturday.

The manager said of Izaguirre: “He had a scan the other day and has got a very small tear.

“We will see how he is progressing, but he may miss next week.”

James Forrest signs a new five-year deal

CELTIC are delighted to announce that James Forrest has signed a new five-year deal with the club.

The 19-year-old, a product of the Celtic Youth Academy, made his first-team debut against Motherwell towards the end of last season, and he scored in a 4-0 victory for the Hoops.

This season, he's been an important part of Neil Lennon's squad, and most recently scored one of Celtic's four goals in the victory over Hearts last Wednesday.

So far, James has made 15 first-team appearances, scoring four goals, and his wing play has thrilled the Celtic support.

Eine schöne Sache! :celt3
